Raffles’ Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus chlorophaeus 33cm)
This small bird, the smallest of the Malkohas recorded in Peninsula Malaysia, is unusual in the degree of difference between male and female, and in its mournful call. Male bright gingery brown with barred blackish tail, each feather tripped white; blue-grey skin round eye. Female similar but light grey head, tail bright rufous brown, each feather tipped black and white. Call three to six thin slow notes, descending scale. Feeds in middle storey, peering under leaves for big insects. Found in lowland forest, secondary growth. Occurs from south Burma to Sumatra and Borneo; resident.
